₦3.3 Trillion Power Bailout: Solution or Another Delay for Nigeria’s Electricity Crisis?
Published April 7, 2026
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has just approved ₦3.3 trillion to settle debts in the power sector. This sounds like progress.
But is this a real solution or just a partial fix to a much deeper problem?
Power Generation Companies (GenCos) have come forward to say that the actual debt owed is closer to ₦6.8 trillion.
That means ₦3.3 trillion covers less than half and a significant gap still remain plus core issues may still persist
So, while the announcement feels like relief, it doesn’t fully resolve the financial strain choking the sector.
Nigeria doesn’t just have a power problem it has an economic problem caused by power failure.
Every year, businesses spend trillions on alternative energy, generators run daily across homes and offices, diesel and petrol costs continue to rise
For the average Nigerian transportation becomes more expensive, food prices increase due to production costs, small businesses struggle to survive.
Electricity is not just a utility it’s the backbone of productivity.
Will ₦3.3 Trillion Fix the Problem?
Let’s be honest this intervention may provide temporary relief to GenCos, improve short-term liquidity, possibly stabilize supply for a while
But it does Will ₦3.3 Trillion Fix the Problem?
Let’s be honest.
This intervention may provide temporary relief to GenCos, improve short-term liquidity, possibly stabilize supply for a while
But it does not (1) fully clear outstanding debts (2) guarantee consistent power supply (3) address structural inefficiencies
So, the real question remains are we solving the problem… or just postponing it?
₦3.3 trillion is a step but not the full journey.
Until the structural issues in Nigeria’s power sector are addressed, businesses and households will continue to bear the burden.
The real solution is not just funding, It’s sustainable, consistent power delivery.
